Dwight Myers, aka "Heavy D," the notorious "Overweight Lover," passed away last week at the age of 44. Heavy D (and the Boyz) enjoyed moderated success in the late 80's, early 90's. Most of us know his work on "Now That We Found Love" and "Nuttin' But Love." Heavy was also responsible for both opening themes of "In Living Color" and MadTV. What many don't know is how successful Heavy was in other endeavors. He became the first rapper to head a major music label when he became president of Uptown Records. During this time, Heavy helped develop the talents of Mary J. Blige and had Sean "Puffy" Combs as an intern. Later on he became the senior vice president of Universal Music. Heavy D also tried his hand in acting, both in plays, television and film. This is one of those guys who has contributed much to his art form and whose contributions outweigh his commercial success. Let's take time to appreciate the man and what he contributed to modern music.

Nov. 15th

Drake

Take Care

This is one of the most anticipated releases of 2011. Following his debut album, Thank Me Later, Drake puts forth his sophomore effort. This album has already spawned two singles, Headlines and Make Me Proud. Drake belongs to perhaps the hottest record label in the industry with Young Money Entertainment. I won't recommend or criticize this album. Instead, I will call it as I see it. This album is probably like his first and most likely similar to other artists on this label, such as Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj. If you like this kind of music.....great. If you are like me, I find that this music has good beats with moderate lyrics. I am going to sample this before I even think about buying this.

Nickelback

Here & Now

This will be the seventh studio album by Canadian rockers, Nickelback. This is a follow up to their Dark Horse album that went multi-platinum. Two singles have already been released from this album, "When We Stand Together" and "Bottoms Up." I wanted to give this a thumbs down soooo bad, but I just couldn't in all fairness. I am sure this album will sell well, they always do. I am sure they will have a few radio hits, they always do. I am just sick of Nickelback. Is anyone with me on this? I know Detroit is. They recently signed a petition to not have Nickelback play there. HAHAHAHA...are you serious? I feel like I need a break, seriously....oh yeah and blond perms are soooo out.

Daughtry

Break the Spell

This is the third studio album from rockers, Daughtry. Their first two albums fared very well, both going multi-platinum. The only reason I didn't give this a thumbs-up is because it is reported that this album is supposed to be nothing like the first two. I am not saying this couldn't be a thumbs up, that precursor just makes me nervous. That being said, three of the songs are being used in ESPN programming, "Renegade," "Louder Than Ever," and "Outta My Head." I hope this album is better than the first two and that the new sound is successful. All this being said, I am still going to purchase this album.

Snow Patrol

Fallen Empires

This will be the sixth studio album from Snow Patrol. Gary Lightbody reports that this is their longest and best album to date. Two singles have already been released with some success in Europe, "Called Out In the Dark" and "This Isn't Everything You Are." I don't know how I feel about this one. I was never a huge Snow Patrol fan to begin with so I am staying neutral on this one.

"Smokin'" Joe Frazier

The "City of Brotherly Love" lost one of it's icons last week when it lost Joe Frazier. Joe Frazier was a boxing legend. "Smokin' Joe" was an Olympic and Heavyweight world champion. Frazier first became Heavyweight champion in 1970 and also the next year when he beat Muhammad Ali in the "Fight of the Century." Two years later he was beaten by George Foreman and never regained the title. He faced Ali two more times over his career, but lost both. The third of which was the famous "Thrilla In Manila." Ali and Frazier has a rocky relationship in the years following their bouts. Initially, Ali called Joe a gorilla and later Foreman was quoted as saying that they should have thrown Ali in the Olympic flame. Both men retained respect for another and when Joe passed, Ali attended a small, personal funeral. Frazier had said that his ill feelings toward Ali were gone in a 2009 article. Ali was reported to have said that the world lost a great boxer after Frazier's death.

Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of the Duke Blue Devils, now sits atop the all-time wins column of Division I basketball. He passed his friend and mentor, Bob Knight on Nov. 15th with a win over Michigan St. 903 wins is remarkable, especially by today's standards. Coach K should be celebrated for his accomplishments. He has always run a clean program and has been one of the best teachers and molders of young men. Even if you don't like Duke, or the ACC, you have to give credit where credit is due. During his tenure with Duke, Coach K has led Duke to 4 National Championships, 11 Final Fours, 12 ACC Championships, and 13 ACC Tournament titles. In addition, he is the current coach of the Men's USA basketball team and led them to gold in the 2008 Summer Olympics and again in 2010 at the FIBA World Championships. Oh yeah, and as if that isn't enough, he was an assistant coach for the 1992 "Dream Team." Congrats Coach K....you earned it!

Penn State

This logo seems to be popping up all over the place. I don't think I can do a blog, that includes sports, and not at least mention what is happening at Penn St. At this time, I am going to keep it simple. It is sad and nobody wins. This is not about Penn St. and this is not about Joe Paterno. It is about the victims. I have included a link to read the Jerry Sandusky Grand Jury report so that you can formulate your own opinions. I do feel that this story will ignite other stories around the country and encourage other people to come forward. I hope that people take this seriously and not make false claims, just for their 15 minutes of fame.

Joe Paterno

I chose this image to remember "Joe Pa" in good light. He was an outstanding coach and the all-time wins holder in Division I football. The man coached at Penn St. for 61 years, 46 of which was as head coach. That is remarkable, especially by today's standards where longevity is unheard of. Unfortunately for Paterno, his legacy will be tarnished, it has to be, but how much, only time will tell. It is sad that things had to end this way. I will share more on this when he makes a statement or when more facts surface about his involvement or lack there of in these tragic events. I do believe that the school should decline any bowl invitation this year. As unfair as this may be to the current players, I just don't see what good could come from that.

Florence + the Machine
Ceremonials

This is the sophomore album by British Indie-Pop band, Florence + The Machine. This album is highly anticipated in the wake of the first album's success. The new album draws comparisons to Kate Bush, Bjork, Adele, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and PJ Harvey. The album has already spawned three singles, "What the Water Gave Me," Shake It Out," and "No Light, No Light." If you have not listened to them before I suggest sampling the album first.

Miranda Lambert
Four the Record

FOUR the Record is the FOURth studio album released by country artist, Miranda Lambert....clever girl....The album's first single, "Baggage Claim," debuted at #33 on the country charts, which is the highest debut for any of her singles. Personally, I think she has one of the better sounds in country music today. I think she has an excellent blend of modern country, blue grass, girl power and song writing that works. I highly recommend picking up this album. Also, check out a side project of hers....Pistol Annies....

Nov. 8

Disturbed
Lost Children

This will be the sixth album by metal band, Disturbed. This album will be a collection of B-sides. I am often weary of B-side albums because there is usually a reason that the songs didn't make the A side. I usually only get B-side collections if the artist has strong song writing skills or is in a genre that doesn't get much airplay. Neither of these criteria fit this album. Although I love Disturbed, I am going to sample this one.

Rush
Time Machine 2011: Live In Cleveland

I haven't been able to find much information about this album but I will do my best. This album was taken from last year's Time Machine tour. This album was recorded in Cleveland and encompasses the entire Moving Pictures album. I have only recently become familiar with their work and am sorry it took me so long to see the light. If you are like me...check it out before any more time passes. Rush is a great band and don't seem to be losing any steps with age.

Noel Gallagher
Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

This is the debut album from former Oasis front man, Noel Gallagher. Gallagher claims to have drawn inspiration from Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and Jefferson Airplane for the title of his album. "The Death of You and Me" is slated to be the first single off of the album. The album is getting overly positive reviews from critics. I will check this out based on pure curiosity. I would recommend doing the same before buying it outright.

Angels & Airwaves
Love Part One & Part Two

This is a follow-up album from last year's "Love." This also coincides with an Angels & Airwaves movie of the same name. For those of you unfamiliar with the band, they feature Tom Delong, front man from Blink 182. All songs were written by Delong for this album as well. The first single is scheduled to be "Anxiety." If you like Blink 182, you most likely will like this, although the musical composition is deeper and on a much grander scale.

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 Soundtrack

Firstly, if I didn't mention this album, my wife would kill me. Secondly, these albums are actually really good. They always feature a strong mixture of well-known and lesser-known artists. The music is usually a mix of Rock, Indie-Rock and ballads. This album contains Christina Perri, The Joy Formidable, and Bruno Mars among others. For those in doubt, listen, it may surprise you. I own the first three soundtracks and enjoy them very much.

ESPN Announces New Network
Due to the continuing increase in athlete-related crime, ESPN has decided to release a network targeted at covering these events. The network will be called Back Court TV. Initially, the network will be supplemental and will only be included in premium packages. Rumour has it that a free trial will be given to all cable/satellite subscribers for the week following it's release on January 1st. The station will carry up-to-the-minute information about all court proceedings, hearings, sentencing, and probation. Experts will also be weighing in with legal advice and giving odds of the outcome. The use of back-court when titling the show is thought to be a jab at the increasing number of off-the-court antics by NBA players. Currently, there has been no backlash from players or owners. I provided you with a sample of the channel's logo.

***Did you buy this? This was totally made up. My point in fabricating this was to demonstrate the sad state of off-the-field behaviors by professional athletes. If you found this to be believable then you too understand how bad it has gotten. Sorry to be misleading but it gives you something to think about.

Hot Stove Preview...

This MLB off season posts one of the weaker big-name classes in recent years. However, if a team approaches this in the right way, they can rebuild their team for decent prices. Since I am a Yankees fan, I will focus on the Yankees off season. The Yankees have recently resigned Brian Cashman to a three year extension. CC Sabathia also resigned for an extension. Most people assume that the Yankees are going to pursue Albert Pujols because he is the biggest name on the market. However, in a recent interview, Brian Cashman admitted that Pujols is not on the list. I don't completely buy it but in some ways I hope this is true. Cashman acknowledged that the Yankees did lose in the postseason because of their offense but feels that pitching is the key to a strong team. He also admitted that Rangers starting pitcher CJ Wilson was high on his list. I like this idea. Currently, Wilson is projected as the 8th best free agent. Other big names this off season are Prince Fielder, Jose Reyes, Jimmy Rollins, Mark Buehrle, Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Beltran, David Ortiz, Carlos Pena, Jonathan Papelbon, Jim Thome and JD Drew. As a Yankees fan, I can't wait until they drop the dead-weight that is A-Rod and sign some other players who actually contribute. For his salary, they could practically buy the entire American League. I would much rather drop his salary and pick up another third base free agent like Aramis Ramirez, Eric Chavez, or Wilson Betimet, any of which I would prefer to have at this time. Everyone always says that you have to spend money to compete with the Yankees. In recent years, the Yankees have HAD to spend money to keep up with some of these other teams. I would love to hear how other sports fan's feel this year's free agency will go.....send me your thoughts.

Rook Arikes?

Apparently, the new trend in Asia is couples dressing alike. How would you feel about dressing like your spouse or significant other? Most of you probably think it is lame or ridiculous. Let me tell you why I like this. First, since PDA's are still taboo in the Asian culture, this is a way for couples to express their affection toward each other. They have even started selling outfits in pairs and advertising clothes in magazines as couples. If the relationship does not work out, the clothes are discarded. Secondly, wouldn't you rather see a couple dressing alike instead of making out in front of you? Well I would. I don't think this trend would ever catch on in America, but I respect what Asian couples are trying to do. I do, however, think it is more a testament for women's commitment to affection because all of the clothing was on the masculine/unisex side of fashion. None of the clothing was feminine in any manner other than color. I guess that is to be expected from such a male dominated society.

Beavis and Butthead are Back

Mike Judge's delinquent teens are back! The series originally aired on MTV's Liquid Television in 1992. It ran successfully through 1997. These two teens, ignorant and oblivious to the way the world works, made mischief through most of the 90's. In past episodes, they spend their time critiquing music videos. In the new series, they have been critiquing more shows than videos. This is fitting since MTV no longer plays music videos. Very little has changed for this dynamic due. If you were a fan back in the day as I was, tune in, it is well worth it. If you never watched it...you should give it a try. I have included the pilot from 1992 for you below. These "minisodes" have been far less seen as fewer people followed Liquid Television.....enjoy!!

This week I would like to retire a phrase....a sports phrase....It seems like every year there is a catch phrase that commentators use when describing a play....last year it was pick 6 and the year before it was "pin their ears back." New releases this week...
Toby Keith
Clancy's Tavern

This will be Toby Keith's 15th studio album. His first single off of this album, "Made In America," has reached number one on the country charts. This album was named after his grandmother bar in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Bottom line is that Toby Keith is one of the biggest stars in country music today and his albums always do very well. If you like his music, this is probably a safe purchase.

Coldplay
Mylo Xyloto

This is the fifth studio album from Coldplay. This is one the most anticipated album releases of this fall. The first single, "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall," has already done very well. So far, this album has been met with favorable reviews. This has been described as a concept album. I personally have enjoyed their other releases and don't expect this to be any different. This is probably another safe purchase.

Kelly Clarkson
Stronger

This will be the fifth album from American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson. This album was supposed to be released in 2010 but was pushed back several times. Most people I speak to have a very polarized opinion of Kelly Clarkson. They either love the pop side of her or appreciate the darker, more recent material. Either way, she sings with feeling and typically writes about experience. This should be as good as her last album but we shall see. You may want to sample this one before you buy it.

The NBA Lockout
I am not going to take sides on this matter. I will only ask this.....Does anyone care that there may not be a NBA season? Most people will say no. College basketball grows increasingly more competitive and the tournament has been very surprising in recent years. I do care for the following reasons. Here are my problems with the current state of the NBA. First, the playoffs last year were incredible. They were competitive, close, unpredictable and worth watching. With no season, there will be nothing to switch back and forth with my hockey playoffs. Secondly, the NBA has perhaps the most to lose out of the big four sports. The NBA struggled to recover after last lockout and I imagine the same will happen when all is said and done. Also, the NBA has the greatest percentage of stars under 30 years old. Most of the talent in the league is young and have long careers ahead of them. The league will just lose a ton of revenue with this ordeal. I hope this ends soon.

The State of the NFL
With a shortened preseason, it holds true that the cream will rise to the top. I think most of us will be surprised at some of the records that teams around the NFL have. Here is my opinion on if these teams are legit or not.

Buffalo Bills (4-2) NOT
As much as this pains me to say, these guys are not legit. They are much improved from last year and do have some developing talent, but I feel they will get swallowed in the drive for the playoffs. I have to believe that the two wild cards will go to Pittsburgh/Baltimore and the Jets.

Cincinnati Bengals (4-2) NOT
This is one of the better stories of the year. Andy Dalton has come in and made Cincinnati forget about Carson Palmer very quickly. Experts felt that Dalton and Ponder were the most prepared to do well in the NFL. Dalton has proved it. In addition, this may be Marvin Lewis' best coaching job since he has been with the Bengals. I feel that the Bengals will be hurt by the fact that they are in a strong division. They will get beat up on by the Ravens and the Steelers.

Oakland Raiders (4-3) NOT
My opinion for this team only recently changed. I thought these guys had a real chance to win the division, but I think this chance went away with Jason Campbell's injury. The matter only gets worse. They traded away almost all of their draft picks for next year with an "all in" attitude to get Carson Palmer. He is definitely a better solution than Kyle Boller, but it will take too much time to adjust to playing again and learning a new offense.

San Francisco 49ers (5-1) LEGIT
This team has been on the rise and perhaps had only been missing strong quarterback play to become a contender. Well this year, Mr. 9 lives, Alex Smith, is playing some good ball. This team has assumed coach Harbaugh's "chip on the shoulder" attitude and is playing aggressive, mean, smart football. These guys are for real and have a strong chance to run away with this division.

Detroit Lions (5-2) LEGIT
This team has a ton of young talent with limitless possibilities. They are good and will contend. My problem is this....their division. They won't win their division and therefore need to battle for one of the wild card spots. With Chicago nipping at their heels, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Dallas and Philadelphia all contending, this is going to be a war down the stretch. I hope they can pull it off but I think they are still a year away from being a contender.

Washington Redskins (3-3) NOT
Any Bears fan knows the trials and tribulations of Rex Grossman. He can throw for 400 yds and 3 TD's one week and throw 5 picks the next. This won't suit the team and Shanahan won't stand for it. They have put John Beck on the battlefield the last couple of weeks with limited results. This team is mediocre anyway and are being helmed by two back-up quarterbacks. I think they benefited from a short preseason and had a quit sprint out the gate....unfortunately they have no stamina.

Lastly, I have to believe that the Eagles are going to get it together and contend, the Colts are a totally different team with Manning and the Panthers are going to be a team to fear, even at 2-5.

Forever Lazy
Has anyone seen the new infomercial sensation?....the Forever Lazy.....Well, it is kinda like a full-body Snuggie. It comes in three colors; pink, blue and gray and sells for about 30 bucks. Now before you say, WTF? I do have to point something out. The Forever Lazy comes with front and back flaps so you don't have to disrobe to do your business....I know...genius. This feature alone makes me at least a little bit more tolerant to a bad idea. Has anyone sat on a cold toilet seat and thought, hey, this experience would be much better with a blanket. For practical reasons, you can't cover yourself with a blanket while your on the toilet...there are far too many risks for droopy fabric. I by no means endorse a product like this, but I would be hypocritical not to admit that some features of this intrigue me. I could see myself lounging around with nothing on underneath this. I can't imagine this idea catching on but hey, I said that about the Snuggie. Enjoy the commercial!

80 Proof Gummies?

A new trend is sweeping the nation: alcohol infused gummy bears. Teens are apparently soaking their gummies in alcohol and then eating them at school. If your teen has been buying gummy bears or had a sudden spike in the interest of candy....you should be aware. Let's be honest, even if the school and parents find a way to prevent this from happening, kids are going to find a way to consume alcohol. I am just sensible enough to admit that kids are smarter than us. We are more wise, but they are more savvy and resourceful. They have access to any information they want at the touch of a button on the Internet.....we had to rely on our creepy uncle to teach us stuff like this. The best thing to do is talk to your kids and be a parent....just being there for them is half the battle.

I am switching up my blog. I have been on hiatus for some time. I didn't really like the direction this site was going. I began to feel burdened to complete this weekly when I initially started it for fun. I decided to include some more ideas that I am familiar with. I hope you all enjoy, and as always, I welcome your input.

Music

R.E.M. takes a rest after 30+ years:

R.E.M. decided to call it quits after 30+ years of musical contribution. They released this statement on their website on September 21st, "To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." They formed in Athens, Georgia as an integral member of the college rock scene. They should be appreciated for paving the way for the alternative and indie rock movements. I think you have to identify them as one of the best, consistent and influential American bands of all time. No doubt, many of you have an extensive R.E.M. play list. Most people know the words and always sing along whenever the songs come on. My only regret is that I got into R.E.M. a little too late. I missed most of their early, classic albums and have only enjoyed them in retrospect. Thanks for the music.....

Jane's Addiction

The Great Escape Artist

This is the fourth studio album and the first in eight years by Jane's Addiction. This album has already produced two singles, the second of which is entitled, Irresistible Force. I absolutely love this song. I highly recommend checking it out. From what I understand, this is true Jane's Addiction sound with some modern influences from bands such as Radiohead and Muse. This was a strong effort from the band to put together a solid, memorable album. Perry Farrell, lead singer, stated that he wanted the record to "have a groove impact and hit you like an atom bomb. We've been doing that, so I feel like I'll die happy after this record." Check it out and let me know what you think.

Everlast

Songs of the Ungrateful Living

I will be the first to admit that my input about this album is biased. I have been a huge Everlast fan since his days with House of Pain. I have liked his solo albums as I enjoy the rough mix of rock and hip-hop. This kind of music is not for everyone so be careful. I couldn't find much information about the album but I imagine that you would be better off sampling the album before you buy. Nonetheless, I am still giving it a thumbs up based on who it is. Enjoy!

Montgomery Gentry

Rebels On the Run

This is the seventh studio album by hugely successful duo, Montgomery Gentry. Not much information has been provided for this album. However, one interesting note; inside one lucky CD will be a golden ticket to win a custom Demented Cycles motorcycle.

Patrick Stump

Soul Punk

This will be the debut album by former Fall Out Boy front man, Patrick Stump. What impressed me most about this album is that he did everything on his own for this album, including, performing, composing, writing, playing over 10 instruments and producing this album. WOW! The album is already getting strongly positive reviews. I only hesitate to give this a thumbs up because I am personally, somewhat resistant to the quality of modern music. I most likely will give it a try.

Lalah Hathaway

Where It All Begins

The First Daughter of Soul releases her 6th studio album. Again, I may be biased because I am a huge fan of Donny Hathaway. Either way, this girl can sing. If you like classic R&B, you should like this album. If not, stay away or sample the record.

This week the NFL lost one it's biggest personalities when it lost Al Davis. For me, the loss was bittersweet. In one sense, the man is a legend and the face of the Raider franchise. He was one of the pioneers of the game and perhaps the biggest driving force behind the merger of the NFL and AFL. He is exactly what is missing from the game today, an owner who is not afraid to challenge the status quo. In the other, the man perhaps held on too long and became irrelevant to today's NFL. His bold statements and draft picks have handicapped the Raiders since the fall of their glory days. He was also known to hold grudges, even to the point of handicapping the entire franchise. Which ever side you choose, the man was an integral part of pro football for decades. I also think it is a shame that Sports Illustrated could not include him as a cover story. He may not sell magazines but he is at least worth a mention. Instead we got Jimmy Johnson....whatever. RIP Al.

1929 -2011

He's not a rookie mother, he's a Newton:

It's official, Cam Newton has already been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Congratulations Cam!! I guess I would expect people here in Charlotte to be quick in anointing him a savior, but it seems that others around the country are steady piling on the Cam Newton bandwagon. In all seriousness, why not? The man has come in and made a mediocre team competitive, has a huge arm, and has the ability to extend plays. In addition, through five weeks, he has thrown for over 1600 yds. and been responsible for 12 TD's (7pass/5rush). This is a good looking, confident kid with a world of potential. If the Panthers were smart, they would sign this kid for life and surround him with a plethora of talents to keep him interested and hungry. We could see a perennial contender.

Apparently there is a new fad emerging in the fast food culture. It is called the, and forgive me readers, the McGangBang. Now the interesting thing is that this comes in breakfast McGangBangs or lunch/dinner McGangBangs.

This is a McDouble with a McChicken smashed in the middle. I have not been brave enough to try either version. Maybe that is why I am available to write this blog today. Hey, I know, what's worse than a fast food sandwich......two fast food sandwiches crammed together against their will. Evolution my friends.

Let's face it, there are some words and phrases you just shouldn't use in everyday conversation. I am starting a word wall to include all words and phrases that should be omitted from your vocabulary. Some of these words push gender line expectations, some are overused in today's culture and some words are just plain stupid. The first installment on the word wall is "Dicey." Ex. This situation is getting a little dicey. No good! Time to retire this word...

Here for a Good Time

Well, this is only the 39th studio album from George Strait. The man is a country legend. He co wrote 11 songs on this album and the title single off of the album, Here for a Good Time, debuted at number 29 on the Billboard charts, the second highest debut of his career. The man is still going strong at his age. He also recorded the album at the same studio in which he recorded his last three albums.

Lindsey Buckingham
Seeds We Sow

For those of you who don't know who this is, Lindsey used to be one of the lead singers of Fleetwood Mac. He is also famous for the song Holiday Road, that is featured in the National Lampoon's Vacation movies. That being said, I had no idea he was still performing. I can't imagine this music is relevant to today's standards. Who knows, I could be wrong. Purchase at your own risk.

In review...

Red Hot Chili Peppers
I'm With You

This album is definitely not as good as Stadium Arcadium but I liked it. The album carries a traditional Chili Pepper's sound that can be heard on their most recent albums. I guess I still miss the Chili Peppers of old, with aggressive bass lines and energetic performances. I guess that's what happens when you get old, they have slowed down and become more of a professional band. I am not sure that there will be any other singles other than The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie but there were several I liked. Chili Peppers fan will enjoy this I am sure but if you aren't a huge fan, you can probably get away with buying the single online.

Lil' Wayne
Tha Carter IV

I think some time in prison may have done LilWayne some good. I have never been a huge Lil Wayne fan, but, was veryimpressed with the complexity and depth of the lyrics. On several occasions, Ihad to listen twice just to catch the actual meaning. I was somewhatdisappointed with the complexity of the beats but I am sure this would be agood album to play at high volumes on a good system. It is more of the same LilWayne, just with more lyrical prowess. I don't think anyone will be disappointedwith this one. Enjoy!

Watch the Throne

Ihave said this before, I get nervous about big name collaborations. I feltstrongly that this one would be good though. These are the two biggest artistson the label and the album supports this. I wasn't entirely sure how the albumwould be put together and which artist the album would lean toward. Afterlistening, I think it is a good mix for both artists and both styles arestrongly supported. For me, it was also an interesting feel of classic hip-hopand modern style. I am not sure there is much to say here. When it comes tothese artists, you either like this or you don't. If you like this, go out andget the album, you will enjoy.

Muppets: The Green Album

Anything that has to do with the Muppets....I'm game. This is a collection of popular Muppet tracks done by modern artists. This album features OK Go, Weezer and Hayley Williams, The Fray, Amy Lee, Matt Nathanson, The Airborne Toxic Event, My Morning Jacket and more. This is just a fun album. Both kids and adults should be able to enjoy this. I recommend this to anyone who wants classic Muppets with a modern flare.

Lenny Kravitz
Black & White America

I have to admit that this was better than his last couple of albums, for me anyway. With this album, you get classic Lenny sound with more of a retro feel. It has more of a funk undertone that most of his other stuff. I think the album lacks marketable singles but is a reliable reference to Lenny's unique sound. Unless you are a Lenny fan, you may want to pass on this album and get something of his that is stronger, like the album 5.

Big Daddy Kane

It's a Big Daddy Thing

There was a time in the rap world when Big Daddy Kane was the bees knees. He was the coolest of the cool and the illest of the ill. I think he is often overlooked for what he contributed to the rap game. He was one of the pioneering forces in the genre and did a whole lot to bring rap to the forefront. He was smooth and had crazy lyrical game. This was his best selling album and featured such classics as Smooth Operator, Calling Mr. Welfare and Pimpin' Ain't Easy. Another must for collectors and a classic piece of rap history. Ch-check it out.

Eric Clapton

Unplugged

This is the second unplugged album I have had in this section after Nirvana. This one I feel is just as important. This marked a resurgence in the career of Eric Clapton. While he never really went anywhere, his popularity definitely waned. This set featured the song Tears In Heaven, which was written about the loss of his son, and went on to be a major hit. It also marked the revival of many classic rockers such as Neil Young and Tom Petty. This helped the MTV generation learn to appreciate some of the music that never had the marketing power of music video.

The Pistol Annies

The Pistol Annies are a country music supergroup consisting of Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley. They formed after performing for the Academy of Country Music's "Girl's Night Out" special in April. They have just released their first album,. Hell On Heels and a single of the same name. I learned about these guys on Sunday (thanks Beth) and loved it immediately. I had to share the wealth. Get on this train while it is pulling out of the station because it may be hard to catch when it gets to full speed.

The Merry Goes 'Round

This album only gets a neutral rating because the readers of this blog probably won't purchase a children's album, but the content is probably good. This is set to be a follow-up of her first children's album, Lullabye. She said that she wanted to make an album that was fun for kids and adults. I am not sure if adults are going to run out and buy a CD full of childrens' songs, but I could be wrong. Jewel has proven herself to be a good song writer but I think the response to this album will be divided; if you want a great album to play for your kids....."thumbs up"........if you want an adult contemporary album......probably not what you are looking for.

Blue October
Any Man In America

This is the sixth studio album by rock band, Blue October. This album was produced by Tim Palmer who has produced for some industry heavy hitters like, U2, David Bowie, The Cure, Robert Plant and Pearl Jam. For me, one of the appeals of Blue October is the lead singer, Justin Furstenfeld. He is very good at writing about real life and his past experiences. This new album is based around his divorce and custody battle over his daughter.

Most people don't know that Jeff Bridges was a musician before he was an Academy Award winning actor. In 2009, Bridges played a fallen country music star in the film Crazy Heart. He sang 5 of the 16 tracks off of the album. He signed with famed jazz label Blue Note records for his debut album. Coincidentally, he won an Academy Award for his role in Crazy Heart. I have no reason to think that this album won't be very good. I think it will be worth checking out.

Live at Soho

This is an EP album recorded live at the Apple store in Soho NY. This album contained music from his most recent album, Mission Bell, which debuted at #1. Amos Lee is a quality artist who continues to gain popularity. If you don't feel like getting this live set, pick up Mission Bell. You will enjoy!

Breaking Benjamin
Shallow Bay: The Best of Breaking Benjamin

If you refer to the information provided in the last post, you will remember that this album was released without lead singer Benjamin Burnley's permission. Because of this, he is suing his band mates. So, this may be the last product released from the band. Let's hope not because they have been one of the best and most consistent rock bands of the last decade.

30 Grandes de Frank Sinatra

This is what it is, a compilation release of Frank Sinatra classics. I give this a neutral rating because this doesn't stand out from the others in any way. If you don't have a Frank Sinatra compilation album, you may want to check this out. I don't really think it matters. Bottom line, just get some Frank Sinatra music, the man is a legend for a reason.

Success Is Certain

I ended up liking this album. I am hoping I am able to give you an unbiased opinion. I have been on Royce's bandwagon since hearing him on Bad Meets Evil. I am very sorry I had not listened to his music before now. The album was as expected, less consciencious than I like but better than most crap that is on the radio nowadays. It sucks that this album won't get the air play or the medio hype that it should. In one aspect, I am happy because that leave his music to true rap fans. If you want a rap album that is much better than most, give it a listen.

De La Soul
3 Feet High and Rising

This was the debut album from rap group De La Soul. De La Soul were affiliated with Native Tongues, rap groups who were positive-minded and culturally aware. This album always gets voted into the top 100 rap albums of all time. This album is fun and playful and a must have for any collector. It is hard to comment on this album because in many ways it is unlike anything else I have heard. Give it a chance.

Concrete Blonde
Bloodletting

I don't think Concrete Blonde ever got the recognition they deserved or developed the following they warranted. I, myself, overlooked these guys during the early nineties. I am sorry I did. Concrete Blonde was producing Gothic rock way before it was popular or cool. This album is vampire driven and has a dark and eerie undertone. The lyrics are haunting, yet poetic. If you have never heard them, they are highly worth checking out. I just heard this album recently and I don't think it is dated. This album only sparked one single, Joey, which in rare form, is by far not the best track on the album. Check out the songs, Bloodletting (The Vampire Song), The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden and Lullaby.

You oughtta know...

The Decemberists

This is an indie folk rock band from Portland, Oregon. They have released six full length album to date. What makes these guys worth checking out is their lyrics, which often focus on historical events or folklore. In addition, their live shows are know to be eclectic and entertaining. They often involve audience participation or reenactments of historical events or regional lore. They are highly worth checking out and may be nothing like you have ever heard. If they come to a venue near you, definitely run out and see them. I have included one of the songs that they are known to perform in depth. (The Mariner's Revenge Song)

In memory...

This past week we lost Jani Lane, lead singer of hair-metal band, Warrant. JaniJani. It is rumoured that Jani hated the song Cherry Pie, so it would be unjust to put that on here. Instead, I chose to include Heaven, a power ballad and a fitting tribute to the end of a rocker's life.

In other music gossip, Hilary Duff and her husband will be expecting their first child. How old am I getting when Lizzy McGuire is pregnant...yikes. It is also rumoured that Britney Spears and Lady Gaga are teaming up.....for the first ever skank-off?....nope for a duet....sigh....

In Charlotte...

As with last week, the place to be is going to Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheater. Jack's Mannequin will be hear on Friday. From what I have heard, they tend to put on an entertaining show. On Sunday, My Morning Jacket will be here. These guys are amazing and remind me a little bit of old Radiohead. I have heard some that feel their music is life changing. Either way check out one of these shows this week. I wouldn't be doing justice if I didn't at least mention that Journey, Foreigner and Night Ranger will be at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on Sunday. Woowee!!!!! Break out the acid washed jeans, feather your hair, cut the sleeves off of your favorite rock t-shirt and rock on!!!!

Watch the Throne

This album is currently available for digital download on iTunes. It will be released on August 12th in CD format. For those of you who don't know, The Throne is a collaboration between Roc-a-fella Record's two best selling artists, Jay-Z and Kanye West. The Watch the Throne tour will be kicking off sometime in September to promote this album. This album has already spawned two singles, H-A-M and Otis. I always endorse both artists so I am looking forward to this album. Normally I worry about collaborations like this, but in past performances, Kanye seems to know his place around Jay-Z. I guess it helps when he is your boss! Enjoy! By the way....this album has hit #1 in 23 countries already.

This will be Luke's third studio release. His first two albums reached number two on the charts and I don't expect this one to be any different. His last album has been certified gold and he continues to pick up steam with his career. I am happy to hear that he co wrote 8 of the 13 tracks on this album. I appreciate any artist that writes their own material. I am sure this album will be decent, I personally have more interest in the singer/songwriter or bluegrass side of country. He will also be performing this week in Charlotte with Tim McGraw.

Gucci Mane & Waka Flocka Flame
1017 Bricksquad Presents...Ferrari Boyz

This is a collaborative album by rappers, Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame of the 1017 Bricksquad. No, Waka Flocka Flame is not the pyromaniac version of Fozzie Bear. If you remember Wocka Flocka Flame was shot in Charlotte not too long ago. Apparently he has made a strong recovery. This album also contains input from other members of the squad like, Wooh da Kid, Frenchie, Slim Dunkin', Ice Burghandy, YG Hootie and production from Drumma Boy, Schife, Southside Luellen, FATBOI, and Shawty Redd. Are you flippin' serious?! Who the hell comes up with these names? Who takes this crap seriously? The cover alone makes me nauseous. Where are Statler and Waldorf when you need them? I am going to try to keep this short and sweet; I will not endorse this album. If you like this kind of rap, more power to you. I will stick with those rappers who have talent. Always remember if you don't listen to this crap.....it may go away.......I apologize if this offended anyone, it is my blog and I get to call it as I see it.

Success Is Certain

This is the fifth studio album from Detroit rapper, Royce da 5'9. I have starting to listen to more of his material after I heard him with Eminem on Bad Meets Evil. I liked what I heard so far. On this album, he gets production from the one and only DJ Premier. There are special guest appearances by Joe Budden, Travis Barker and of course Eminem. Two singles have already been releases off of this album; Writer's Block, featuring Eminem and Second Place. The latter of which was rumored to have guest appearances by Raekwon and Method Man of Wu-Tang Clan but no longer does because of a leak of information. You are presented with two rap CD releases this week. One good and one bad.....make the right choice.

The rumor mill...

I heard some gossip about two popular bands that I wanted to share with everyone. The Kings of Leon cancelled their recent Charlotte show and have cancelled the rest of their tour. "Rumor" has it that the lead singer, Anthony Followill, has an addiction problem, "rumored" to be alcohol. As more information comes out, we shall see what the real reasons were for canceling the show and the tour. Secondly, major drama with the band Breaking Benjamin. This really sucks because I really do like this band. Apparently, last year, the lead singer, Benjamin Burnley, cancelled shows due to "vocal exhaustion or recurring illness." Very soon after, he performed a number of solo shows. So now, his band decided to release a greatest hits album without his consent. So of course what does he do? Yep, he sued his band mates. Nice.....So I hoped you liked what you heard because it sounds like Breaking Benjamin is Breaking Bad.....(two pop culture references in one sentence...nicely done Sean!) In a bit of side news, Gavin DeGraw was hospitalized after being assaulted and hit by a cab in the same night. Chalk that up as the only recent Gavin DeGraw hit......aww...too soon? Lauryn Hill's former guitarist is suing her for unpaid wages.

Album reviews...

Let's face it. There hasn't been much coming out that I have wanted to buy. I have been trying to review at least three albums per week but I have run out of current albums to review. If there is anything you want me to check out or be the guinea pig for, let me know. I will review your request and post my thoughts.

I was a little disappointed when listening to this album. I guess I was expecting it to be a little better. Don't get me wrong, the music is still good, it was just all over the place. It reminded me of Sublime more than anything else. I miss the use of horns in their music. The only potential single I could hear on this album was Gotta Be Wrong Sometimes. The only thing that stops this from getting a bad review is that I understand that this band is progressive and likes to expiriment with sounds. You might want to give this a listen before you buy.

This weeks throwback albums...

Nas

Illmatic

This was the debut album from one of the greatest MC's of all time. Illmatic is considered by many to be the best rap album of all time. I still listen to this album a lot. The material is dated but Nas' flow is timeless. Every time I hear N.Y. State of Mind it brings me back to the golden age of hip-hop. If you sleep on this album any longer you will be Rip Van Winkle. Get it if you don't have it....plain and simple. Why would you not want to own one of the best albums ever. As far as rap music goes, this is piece of fine art, like the Mona Lisa or the Parthenon. When you have the chance to own a piece of history, you take it.

Smashing Pumpkins

Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness

In my opinion, this is the most epic rock album released in my lifetime since Pink Floyd's The Wall. I know this is a strong statement but I stand by it. Given what this album is, a masterpiece of progressive and visionary work, this is one of the all-time classics. It is a journey from start to end. Billy Corgan's songwriting is top notch and their was even heavy contributions from guitarists, D'arcy Wretzky and James Iha. Prior to this album, it is rumored that Corgan wrote tirelessly and wrote 56 songs over the course of a year. This album earned them 9 Grammy nominations and has gone 12x platinum. The album also spawned 6 charting singles. The sheer numbers are staggering. This album was intended to be a statement about the cycle of life and death. I admit it took me a couple listens to fully "understand" the album, but I loved the sound from minute one. This music is still relevant and I highly recommend this for any collector or music lover.

You oughtta know...

Ray LaMontagne

Ray Lamontagne was born to a traveling mother and a violent musician father. For this reason, Ray seldom engaged in musical activities. He spend most of his time reading in the forest. LaMontagne eventually landed in Maine working in a shoe factory. One morning at 4am, he awoke to Stephen Stills' Treetop Flyer. Ray purchased the Stills Alone album, which influenced him to quit his job and become a song writer. Let's be thankful that this chain of events happened. I admit, I first heard the song Trouble, on the Traveler's Insurance commercial. I came across the rest of the album by chance and loved it immediately. He is the epitome of current folk music and has an unmistakable raspy voice that lends a pureness to his music. You should definitely check him out.

In Charlotte...

This weeks venue of note is the Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheater. On Tuesday, the Goo Goo Dolls will be performing. Go support a hard working band from Buffalo. Wednesday, the Get $leazy Tour tramps into town featuring Ke$ha. This should be a high-energy, entertaining show. Fountains of Wayne
Sky Full of Holes

This is the fifth studio album from New York rock band Fountains of Wayne. From the information I have received, this album is supposed to be more sedated than past. Their sound apparently remains harmonic but with more believable lyrics. I like this band but am somewhat familiar with their catalogue. I am more familiar with the handful of singles they have released. I have a neutral recommendation on this album.

O.A.R.

King

This is the seventh studio album by O.A.R. They have already released the single, Heaven, which has reached #1 on the iTunes rock chart. I have always thought this band to be underrated even though they seem to consistently deliver a good product. These guys continue to be popular among the college crowd as many of their lyrics are relative to either their high school or college days. I would recommend checking this album out.

Trace Adkins
Proud to Be Here

This is the tenth studio album from country music star Trace Adkins. I personally do not get all the hype and success of this artist. I think he talks in his songs far more often than he sings. If I want to hear a man with a deep voice talk on disc, I will get a book on tape narrated by James Earl Jones. This being said, many people enjoy his music and his fist single off of this album, Just Fishin' has reached #12 on the country charts.

Mat Kearney

Young Love

This will be the fourth release by Nashville songwriter Mat Kearney. When listening to his music, you can tell he is a true singer/songwriter and can definitely hear the Nashville influence in his writing. However, in direct contradiction to the traditional Nashville style, Kearney revealed that he will be using a rapping style that can be heard on past albums. He feels that this style is a return to innocence. His first single, Hey Mama, has already been released for digital download.

As you probably know by now, on September 23rd and 24th, there is going to be a mega concert/festival in Las Vegas, NV. iHeartRadio is an App. and website that allows you to listen to radio stations all over the world. The more I think about this, the more remarkable it is that they had so many artists commit to this festival. I am not sure I have witnessed such a vast collection of artists at one event in my lifetime. This thing is supposed to be huge and sold out in 10 minutes. I expect a media explosion as a result, dvd's, cd's, apps, who know. Follow if you can, it should be highly entertaining. Below I have included a list of artists who have committed to play with more supposed to be announced over the course of the summer. Among the performers are, Lady Gaga, Steven Tyler, Jane's Addiction, Kenny Chesney, Black Eyed Peas, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, David Guetta, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Kelly Clarkson, Rome w/Sublime, Sting, Usher and more...WOW!

Wu-Tang

Legendary Weapons

I truly wasn't expecting to like this all that much but I did. I thought it was very reminiscent of older Wu-Tang and I enjoyed it on the first listen. I am not sure how this is a compilation album as I hadn't heard the material before. Also didn't miss GZA as much as I thought. The sound was still grungy and the samples used were in form with Wu-Tang's style. It was definitely a nice break from all the crap you hear on the radio now. If you are a Wu-Tang fan you will definitely enjoy this album. I don't think this album will get much airplay but Wu-Tang's music rarely does and to be quite honest I don't think it is meant to....and I like it that way.

Joss Stone

LP1

This is another strong release from Joss. This girl has soul spilling out her ears. I think one thing that Joss does better than anyone is gives you a raw, intimate feeling with her music. There is so much emotion in her words that you can't help but feel a connection with what she is singing. This is a good album to chill out with and enjoy. She has transitioned succcessfully from a soulful young lady into a soulful woman and that transition is evident in her lyrics.

This week's throwback albums...

Bush

Sixteen Stone

Bush was basically England's answer to the grunge success of Pearl Jam and Nirvana. This debut of Bush peaked at No.4 on the Billboard charts and has reached over 6 million in sales. The album produced 5 top 40 singles and propelled the band into stardom. The album is named 16 Stone after a friend of lead singer, Gavin Rossdale's called a number looking for a 21 year old Scandinavian beauty. When she arrived at the home she was in her 40's and weighed in at 16 Stone (a UK measurement of weight...16 Stone=224lbs.) This album is worth checking out and is still fun to listen to today.

Junior M.A.F.I.A.

Conspiracy

Junior M.A.F.I.A. (Master at Finding Intelligent Attitudes) was a rap group formed and mentored under the guidance of Notorious B.I.G. This group is responsible for launching the career's of Lil' Kim and Lil' Cease. Unfortunately the group broke up after the death of Biggie in 1997. An interview with Notorious B.I.G. revealed that he was planning on retiring from rap in 2000 to manage this group. Oh what could have been. This record managed to spawn two singles, Player's Anthem and Get Money. Worth checking out. As I always say, a must have for any true rap collection.

You oughtta know...

The Old 97's

The Old 97's are an alternative country band who formed in Dallas, TX in 1993. They are considered to be the pioneers of the alt-country movement of the mid and late 90's. Elektra records picked them up hoping that the alt-country movement would be the next grunge movement. Sadly, the movement and the band never gathered as much attention as expected. The band is still solid and worth checking out. They have also been featured in the movie The Breakup.

Someone asked me how I felt about the Rebecca Black phenomenon, Friday. For those three or four people who have never heard the song or seen the video, check it out here.

OK, now that that's out of the way.....I will tell you how I feel. Let me first give you some background. A friend referred her to this place called ARK Music Factory. Since Black was active in the community already singing, dancing and auditioning for shows, this seemed like a good idea. Her mother paid $4,000 dollars for her to shoot this video. Lets face it, this song is AWFUL but is hard not to find it catchy....so mission accomplished I guess. Here are my issues with this. First, Rebecca didn't write the song, ARK did. So I don't feel she should get any grief about how cheesy the lyrics are or how awful the song is. Second, this song should never have been leaked for availability. I am still unclear as to who leaked it, ARK or the family. The family had the master copy but I doubt they have the connections to put the video out there like that. This girl was an honor student and seems like a good kid. She was interested in a cut-throat business who slays the weak and under managed. This video went viral immediately and she received almost 4 million dislikes. That is pretty harsh judgement for an innocent teenage girl. In this media-now world, she never had a chance. People can be cruel and rarely take others' feelings into consideration when they berated and belittle someone. Yes, she has gained publicity and has probably had more media attention this way, but it has all been bad. This is not something she can ever recover from. This stigma will stay with her forever. She can kiss any career in arts and performance goodbye. Even though this songs sucks harder than a Dyson vacuum, I think we should cut this poor girl some slack. Let's call it what it is. A waste of $4K and a lesson learned. I hope she moves on without lingering issues of depression and anxiety.

In Charlotte...

I am switching up my format for this section a little bit. I try to list all the concerts that are coming to town each week. Frankly it is tiring and half of the bands I am unfamiliar with. In addition, most of my followers seem to be from out of town and probably could care less about local events. I would rather give my pick for the concert or venue of the week. If anyone is unhappy with this or feels I should go back to the old format. Please leave your comments. Thanks for the support.

This week the place to be is Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. There are many blockbuster shows coming this week and lots of big names. The Unity Tour rolls into town on Monday and will be featuring 311 and Rome with Sublime, both favorites of this site. Then on Tuesday, another big show. Maroon 5 will be here with Train and Gavin DeGraw. Kings of Leon plays on Friday and finally, Lil' Wayne is here with Rick Ross, Keri Hilson, Far East Movement and Lloyd. Lots and lots of big names. Get out and check out at least one show.

As a side note, Young Jeezy will be playing at the Tremont and Selena Gomez will be playing at the Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheater.

Reflection...

As you know we lost a popular artist this week in Amy Winehouse. Amy was a key figure in the neo-jazz movement. She had only put out two albums, the second of which won her five Grammy Awards; Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Unfortunately as talented as she was, she also had her troubles with drugs and alcohol. In the end she succumbed to these demons. As a music fan, I ask that you remember her for her talents and not for the endless jokes and references made about her troubled life in the past couple years. We lost her at the young age of 27, the same age as Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Janis Joplin.

I had posted a few weeks ago that this album was being released. I am not sure if I was misinformed or the release date was postponed. Either way, this album is slated to be released on Tuesday. This is a compilation album and is supposed to be a follow up to Chamber Music. The problem I am going to have with this album is that GZA does not make an appearance. For my money, he is the best lyricist of the bunch and his absence should be noticeable. I plan on getting this because it is Wu-Tang but I don't expect this to be as good as prior releases.

Joss Stone

As with the previous album, I had reported that this album was set to be released earlier. Again, I am not sure what happened but it is now set to be released on Tuesday. This marks her first album that will be put out on her own label, Stone'd Records. The co-wrote and co-produced the album with David Stewart, half of the Euro-pop due, the Eurythmics. This album took only 6 days to record. always puts out a good product and I don't expect this to be any different.

Kelly Rowland
Here I Am

This is Kelly's third album and will be her first after firing her manager and leaving Columbia Records. It is slated to be a mix of R&B, Pop and Dance. She has help with production from David Guetta and already has spawned a single, Motivation f. Lil Wayne.

Vanessa Carlton
Rabbits On the Run

I had read that Vanessa Carlton was not sure if she wanted to write another album. She had intended on concentrating on writing film scores. However, she did write her fourth album. She stated that she wanted to capture a creepy, dreamy sound inspired by Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time and Richard Adams's Watership Down.

Hell the Sequel

I get worried when I here about rap collaborations. Usually it is two or more rappers with giant egos trying to shine brighter than each other. This collaboration works. I think Royce da 5'9 naturally gives way to the giant ego that is Eminem. Their styles are different but similar enough to make sense and make the album fluid. This album has already reached #1 on several charts and has spawned three singles. If you are a rap fan or an Eminem fan, get this album, I think you will enjoy it. This also makes me want to check out Royce da 5'9's work as well. He holds his own.

Theory of a Deadman
The Truth Is...

I expected to like this album, but I was surprised at how much. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire CD. This is an album that you can listen to and enjoy every track and don't have to worry about skipping any. I can hear many potential singles and even a couple of radio anthems in Bitch Came Back and The Truth Is... You can pick this album up risk free. I don't have much to say really....good band...good music....good album....'nuff said. This album gets one of the highest ratings ever given on this site.

Incubus
If Not Now, When

This is another band that puts out consistently good music. This album is no exception. This album is a lot more chill than I was expecting. The entire album is done at a much slower pace than I am used to but it works. This album also sounds like the most professional piece put together by the band. Incubus always had a raw characteristic within their music and I think that is missing with this album. This is not a bad thing as I enjoyed every track on the album. I think this is another safe buy for anyone who enjoys this style of music. I am not sure that this album will spawn any singles in addition to Adolescents but we will see.

Do you remember when Ja Rule appeared on Jay-Z's Can I Get a...? Everyone was like who is that? Then Ja Rule released his debut album. Everyone was blown away. This album is very good and I recommend getting it. I think you will be surprised at how different it is compared to the "sold out" Ja Rule who became very soft and seemed like he wrote songs strictly for the radio. This album contains a bunch of singles, good beats, descent lyrics and good production. One of the best rap albums of the late 90's and I don't mind taking slack for saying that. Listen and see if you agree.

The Offspring
Smash

This album was the Offspring's break-out success. It seemed like everyone had this album and rightfully so. Every track could be a single and it marked the start of the punk, F the world movement that continues today. The Offspring are a staple among the X-games and alternative crowd. This album sold 12 million copies worldwide! If you don't have it....you are the only one....borrow it from anyone.....I think the Pope even has it. Seriously, if you don't have it get it before anyone finds out.

Citizen Cope

Citizen Cope, or, Clarence Greenwood is a musician originally from Washington, DC and later Brooklyn, NY. Greenwood grew up listening to Sly Stone, Al Green and Willie Nelson to name a few. Washington referred to Greenwood as their "most soulful export since Marvin Gaye." He is multi talented as he plays guitar, keyboard and drums as well as leading in production on his own music. I will be honest; he doesn't get a lot of airplay but his music is fantastic. It is hard to tie-down what his musical style is as every song is vastly different. He definitely has influences of Blues, Soul, Jazz, Rock and Folk, probably even more. If you have never heard of Citizen Cope, give him a listen. Spread the word and help educate people about a true hidden gem.

Corrections...

I will be switching when I post my blogs. I was trying to get them posted by Wednesday of each week so that you would be aware of information over the weekend and throughout the next week. It is just getting too hard to keep up with during the week. Therefore, I will be posting everything on Sunday. That way you will have information for the upcoming week.

I try my best to keep you updated about new releases in music and with local music events. So I get frustrated when I miss something. I regret to inform you of an album release of importance that I missed. On June 14th, Bad Meets Evil released Hell the Sequel.

For those of you who are not familiar with what this is, I will tell you. Bad Meets Evil is a collaborative effort between two prominent Detroit rappers, Eminem and Royce da 5'9. I will be the first to tell you that I am not familiar with much of Royce da 5'9's work. I am however very knowledgeable about Eminem's. I plan on reviewing this album in the upcoming week, so I hope to give you more insight on the quality of the product. I can say that Eminem is one of the 10 best lyricists of all time. Even further, he may be the best at word play that I have ever heard. This alone will keep me buying his product. Even if Royce is weak, I am sure Eminem can carry the album. If you like Eminem's music, get the album. I am sure it will be more of what you are used to.

Since I have been gone there have been some significant music releases. I will do my best to accurately update what we have missed...

On July 5th, Birdman released Bigga Than Life...

Birdman a.k.a. Baby was one half of the duo, Big Tymers. Big Tymers had some success in the early 2000's. He is also co-founder of Cash Money records. Cash Money has produced, Lil' Wayne and Juvenile to name a couple. Birdman refers to Lil' Wayne as his son but this is not biologically so. All of this being said, I don't really care for his music. I think this is exactly what is wrong with the current state of rap music. Rap used to say something. Cash Money definitely contributed to the deterioration of rap. It kills me to know that he is estimated at a net worth of around 100 million. If you decide to buy this album....good luck. I don't expect it to be worth the money you spend.

The Truth Is...

This is the fourth studio album by this Canadian band. All of their previous albums have reached the top 10 in Canada and have done increasingly better in the United States. I personally enjoy their music and think they deserve a little more recognition. I would put these guys in the top three hard-rock bands of today. I would highly recommend checking them out. I don't have any reason to think this album won't be as good as their last three.

Incubus

If Not Now, When

This is another album I would highly recommend checking out. This is their seventh studio album. The band had taken a hiatus in order to prevent burn out and then decided to come together to produce this album. This prompted the title of the album. The album has already produced a largely popular singe in Adolescents. These guys always put out a good product and I suspect this will be more of the same.

Sublime with Rome

Sublime just hasn't been the same since Bradley Nowell's death in 1996. He was the lead guitarist and vocalist. Their chart success backs this up. Finally, in 2009, they decided to team up with Rome Ramirez. The group originally began playing Sublime songs. This album marks the first musical escapade by the group. From the bits and pieces I have heard, I was pleasantly surprised at how good they sounded. I am still on the fence on whether or not I want to check this album out. I may wait to hear a little more before I decide to purchase this outright.

Time of My Life

This is the fifth studio album from this very successful band from Mississippi. Each of their first four albums has reached the top ten in the United States with the first three going at least platinum. They have been pumping out steady hits since 2000. I would expect more consistency out of the band. These guys are always a safe bet. Give it a listen.

They Might Be Giants

I think you either like They Might Be Giants or you don't. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of in between with these guys. Their music is a little nerdy and a little quirky but I have come to like it a lot. However, this is their 15th studio album, so their style must be resignating with a large number of people. This also marks their first non-children's album since 2007. I think this one is pretty straight forward...if you like them get this...if not....probably not.

Universal Pulse

This is the band's 10th studio album. The band's style has changed very little during their career. I have always loved this band and tend to like the unique style. They have invited Sublime with Rome to open up for them on the new tour. The band's first single off of this album, Sunset In July, is very good and shows how consistent these guy's sound really is. I admit that their sound is not for everyone but I think they warrant at least a listen.

Limp Bizkit

Gold Cobra

OK, most people I have talked to who are Limp Bizkit fans seem to like this album. For me, I am still on the fence. I think the return of Wes Borland is obvious as the quality and sound of the music has returned and is very reminiscent of old Bizkit. I guess my problem falls with Fred Durst. I don't think he sounds bad on this album I think he lacks some enthusiasm. Durst presented a cool swagger that border lined on angry and unstable. I felt that was missing on this album. I never felt he was angry or ready to break something. I miss that. For that alone, the album loses some marks for me. If he can gain some of that back, the band could be back in business.

Critical Beatdown

This Bronx-based rap group consisted of Kook Keith, Ced Gee, TR Love and Moe Love. This album was moderately successful upon its release but has been considered a hip-hop classic in the following years. This is a true hip-hop staple and a must have for any serious collection. The group's breakout hit, Ego Trippin' has been included for you below.

Lenny Kravitz

For me, this is the pinnacle of Kravitz's career. He began gaining some steam with several singles prior to this album and has had some success after it's release. This album however contains his best work to date. It is full of singles and creative guitar riffs that make this a very good album. This album went 3xplatinum, produced 6 charting singles and gave Lenny two Grammy Awards for his megahits, Fly Away and American Woman. I strongly recommend anyone who hasn't heard this album to check it out.

You oughtta know...

Umphrey's McGee

I am a huge fan of jam bands. There is something pure about a band that doesn't lose any sound quality playing live. It is nice to know a band can perform without hiding behind all the bells and whistles of a recording studio. A band that I have been hearing more and more over the last year is Umphrey's McGee. They formed at the University of Notre Dame in 1997 and are currently based out of Chicago. Bottom line is that these guys are really good. They are considered an "improg" band, which is a combination of improv. and progressive. They do have similarities to jam bands such as Phish and the Grateful Dead. Many people think that they are more similar to bands like Yes, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa and Genesis. Others think they draw influence from Iron Maiden. They themselves have acknowledged drawing influence from the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Police. As you can see the references are to quite the eclectic variety of music. Anyone I have recommended them to has not been disappointed. I strongly encourage you to check them out; you won't be sorry.

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals

Tamara first head them on the Conan O'Brien show and then saw them open up for the Avett Brothers. She said they are very good. This band has ties to Canto, NY and St. Lawrence University. Give them a listen. Her sound is definitely worth it.

Native Tongues

Native Tongues is a collective of hip-hop artists from the late 80's and early 90's. They were known for their positive-minded, fun Afrocentric lyrics, and for pioneering the use of eclectic sampling and later jazz-influenced beats. Pioneering members included A Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, and De La Soul. Also tied to this movement were Chi-Ali, Black Sheep, Three Times Dope, Leaders of the New School and Queen Latifah. Even current members of the hip-hop scene draw from this, including Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Common. I have included a classic for you.

Beth says these guys are awesome. These guys are country pop trio who formed from a family band called The Clark Family Experiment in Rocky Mount, Virginia. Ashley toured with Carrie Underwood and still have connections to her today. I agree with Beth. I really liked this album. It was different from most music I have heard lately. I guess if I had to pick a similar band, I would say Lady Antebellum, although, these gave more of a rock feel to them. Check 'em out.

Limp Bizkit
Gold Cobra

I was upset when I predicted that Wes Borland's departure from the band would be it's downfall. Obviously, Borland was the talent and Durst was the face of the group. After a moderately successful album without Borland, Limp Bizkit all but disappeared. What is exciting about this is that Borland put aside his differences with Durst and decided to make another Limp Bizkit album because "music needs it." I am looking forward to hearing if they can recreate some of the original Limp Bizkit sound. I am definitely going to check this out.

This Loud Morning

Yes....David Cook did win American Idol. Yes....this does eliminate some of his credibility. It shouldn't. He was the first contestant to win who was actually a talented musician. His first album was actually pretty good. I am looking forward to this album as he should have no more creative restrictions from winning American Idol. He has stated that he draws influence from Our Lady Peace, of which I am a huge fan. I think you will be pleasantly surprised if you decide to check out this album.

Beyonce

At first glance, I thought Beyonce really needed to shave her armpits. I am not going to say much. This has a chance of being the biggest selling album of the summer. I would expect it to be more of the same from Beyonce.

Taking Back Sunday is a rock band from Long Island, NY. Their albums always reach top 10 on the Billboard charts and always reach Gold status. So it goes without saying that this album should be pretty good.

Wu-Tang Clan
Legendary Weapons

I will be a Wu-Tang supported forever. If they put out a polka album I would buy it. I think the original draw of the Wu has worn off, but lyrically, they are still sound. I am definitely getting this album. Wu-Tang mother_%*##$!

Joss Stone

This is the fifth studio album from neo-soul phenom Joss Stone. This girl can sing her butt off. She has one the most soulful voices I have ever heard. This marks her first album that will be put out on her own label, Stone'd Records. The co-wrote and co-produced the album with David Stewart, half of the Euro-pop due, the Eurythmics. This album took only 6 days to record. This should be very very good. Check it out.

Life Is Good

First, let me apologize if this is not the cover of the album. I could not find the artwork. As with the Wu-Tang Clan, I will be a Nas supporter forever. I will always support his product and therefore will surely get this album. He is one of the top three lyricists in the history of hip-hop in my opinion. His music epitomizes what NYC rap is all about. Check it out.

My Morning Jacket
Circuital

I have seen this band in passing a couple of times on TV and liked what I heard. I just have never brought myself to get one of their albums. So when I saw they had a new album coming out, I knew I had to at least give it a shot. I am glad I did. To me, the music sounds a lot like old Radiohead, you know from the early 90's. It may not be as complex but it has similar sound. They also evoke a nostalgic feeling, as if this album could have been released sometime in the 70's. Whatever it is, it works for me. Two of the singles, Wonderful and Outta My System were written to be performed by the Muppet band, Dr. Teeth & Electric Mayhem. When this did not pan out, the singles were kept for the album. My favorite tracks on the album are Circuital and Wonderful and look forward to see if either of these pan out as singles. I would recommend this album to anyone to at least give it a listen. I think the music can appeal to a wide variety of interests.

Snoop Dogg

Ok, I live by the credo that a good hip-hop artist doesn't need a hook. When you start reciting the hook of the song rather than the lyrics, its a wrap (no pun intended). When Snoop came on the scene, he embodied the very essence of what Gangsta Rap was. Part of what makes Snoop a legend has been his ability to adapt to the changing scene of the music industry. Unfortunately it has been harder and harder to keep Snoop relevant. It is hard to uphold Snoop Dogg as a gangsta when he is a football coach, entrepreneur, etc. Snoop Dogg has always been willing to go in a new direction. When No Limit records was getting big, he left Death Row and joined No Limit. When the retro-pimp movement was big, he was into that. When the Neptunes were in their prime, he had them produce his album. I don't think he lost his ability to rap, I'm just not sure it's relevant any more. It pains me to say this but I think the only thing that keeps him going is his clout. He knows people and therefore can get just about anyone to be on his album. On this album, he features such artists as Bootsy Collins, E-40, Young JeezyWiz Khalifa, Gorillaz, Willie Nelson, Kanye West and John Legend. I will continue to support Snoop's music because he is a legend. I don't recommend buying this album unless you feel the same way I do.

Weird Al Yankovic
Alpocalypse

Well, it is another Weird Al album and it doesn't disappoint. I feel like the opinions of Weird Al are very polarized: you either like him or you don't. I happen to like him so I thought the album was entertaining. I don't think he will have any memorable parodies off of this album but it was still entertaining. I think the best chance is TMZ, which is a parody of Taylor Swift's, You Belong to Me. Weird Al also parodies, B.O.B., T.I., Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus. His famous polka medley contains even more well know artists. As my recommendation, if you like Weird Al, go get this. If you don't, don't bother. Whether you admit it or not, Weird Al has established himself as a music icon who always manages to keep his material relevant. You gotta at least respect that.

This weeks throwback albums...

Nirvana
Unplugged In New York

I think this is one of the more influential albums of the 90's. It did a couple of important things for music. First, the Unplugged series gave MTV a different platform to present it's artist at a time when videos were still being played in regular rotation. If provided the audience a more intimate look at some of the popular artists and gave the artists a chance to showcase their live interpretations of songs. Nirvana, perhaps the biggest band at this time provided the audience with a different look at the band's music. Eventually it also led to the resurgence of some artists such as Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Secondly, this album showed Nirvana and the grunge movement was not just all about white noise, ie., Sonic Youth. Nirvana was able to show how talented they were at musicians, song writers and in interpretation. Definite must have for any serious music collection.

Fu-Schnickens
F.U. Don't Take It Personal

I always catch a lot of slack for giving this album more credit than is due. The fact is, this album is good and I love it. I give this album a 6/6. I think it has great beats, great lyrics, great production and marketable tracks. The only knock I can give this to this day is that the material and style is dated. This album produces four memorable singles, True Fuschnick, La Schmoove, Ring the Alarm and Check It Out. For those of you unfamiliar with the group, this is the group that Shaquille O'Neal associated himself with and eventually joined. This group also boasts one of the fastest rappers of all time, Chip Fu, whose lyrical speed will blow your mind. Must have hip-hop classic.

You oughtta know....

I decided to try something new. I wanted to share the wealth so to speak. I have come across some albums in my life that may have been generally overlooked. I want to use this section to motivate people to check out some forgotten gems.

So for the first installment, I bring you:

Lost Highway Soundtrack

This is one of those occasions where the soundtrack actually fared better than the movie. The movie garnered almost no attention and the soundtrack did little better. However, the album contains some hard-rock gems. It features appearances by David Bowie, Trent Reznor, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Marilyn Manson and Rammstein. Many of these were one-of songs written specifically for this soundtrack. Two of these songs that are fantastic are The Perfect Drug by Nine Inch Nails and Eye by Smashing Pumpkins. If nothing else, just give it a listen. I think it is a highly overlooked album.

Sorry for Party Rocking

The guys made a name for themselves touring with Black Eyed Peas. You may know their hit song, Shots. I dislike this band strongly. I think the content of their music is ridiculous and pointless. I may have liked an album about senseless partying when I was 14, but I am an adult now and therefore will happily pass this album by on the shelf. These guys are like a far less talented, special needs version of the Black Eyed Peas.

Michael Bolton
Gems: The Duets Collection

Another Michael Bolton album. Yippee! What is better than Michael Bolton singing....yep...Michael Bolton singing with a partner. I admit, the man does have a good voice.......circa 1991. If you are still listening to Michael Bolton......well......I am sorry, there may be no hope for you. I am sure you and your cats will be very happy together.

Pitbull
Planet Pit

This could be the most anticipated album release of the week. Their may be nobody hotter in music right now than Pitbull. Everything he touches seems to turn to gold. This album has already spawned two hit singles, Hey Baby (Drop It to the Floor) and Give Me Everything. I imagine this album will be hot, good beats, decent lyrics and lots of good guest appearances. Definitely worth checking out.

Simple Plan
Get Your Heart On!

This Canadian pop-punk band usually puts out a good product. It is speculated that their first single off of the album will be You Suck at Love, as they have played this regularly at live shows. They have also announced shooting videos for Can't Keep My Hands Off You and Astronaut. This album also contains guest appearances by some pretty heavy hitters, Rivers Cuomo of Weezer and Natasha Bedingfield. This album should be worth checking out.

Weird Al Yankovic
Alpocalypse

Ok, maybe it is the geek in me but I can't help that I love Weird Al. Whether you want to admit it or not, he is a music icon. Therefore, I will listen to whatever he puts out. I am not a huge fan of his polka music but I do love the parodies. If I was a musician, I hate to say it, but this is the kind of music I would make, sans the polka of course. Give it a listen, if nothing else, it will be entertaining.

Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray

This is the fifth studio album from the South African band. This album debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts, and after listening, I would agree. Country Song has already been released as a successful single. I am going to go out on a limb here and say that Tonight will be the next single. This album, while far less metal or hard rock than previous albums, is still very good. It is solid from start to finish. I think it could be appealing to everyone. I will be interested to see if I am right about the next single. Let me know what you think. This is the best album I have listened to since Fleet Foxes. Go get it!

Arctic Monkeys
Suck It and See

I kind of talked this album up a little and therefore will try to review it unbiasedly. I was immediately a little disappointed. The raw underground English sound that I have come to love with the Monkeys seemed to have moved into the studio. The sound was much more refined and polished. You can hear their efforts at greater harmonies and attempts at a more commercial appeal. The album has not yet sparked a single and after listening, I don't think it will. That is not news for this band as they rarely have a commercially successful single. As with the previous three albums, it took several listens to sink in. For this reason, I will still give the album a decent rating. If you are not a current fan of this band, get their old stuff. Don't start listening to them based on this album. If you are already a fan, you may like it based on the fact that it is an Arctic Monkeys album. I am a little disappointed but it could be worse.

The Airborne Toxic Event
All at Once

This indie band from CA came onto the scene with the hit single, Sometime Around Midnight. They mesh a very satisfying blend of rock and orchestral arrangements. They remind me a little of The Killers. This album has already charted the single, Changing. After listening to the album, I am not sure this will produce another commercially popular single, but the album was very good, top to bottom. I would recommend this album for anyone who likes rock or indie music. They seem like they have stay power and could be around for a while.

EPMD
Business Never Personal

EPMD was a rap duo from New York consisting of Erick Sermon "E" and Parrish Smith "Parrish Making Dollars or PMD." Erick Sermon of course went on to be a successful solo artist and member of the Def Squad along with Keith Murray and Redman. This EPMD spawned their biggest commercial success with Crossover. This album is a must have for any rap fan. Shortly after making this album, money troubles broke up the band and they reunited in 1997.

Kid Rock
Devil Without a Cause

This marked the first true "rock" album released by Kid Rock. It was his first attempt at a crossover career from rapping. Needless to say, it blew everyone away. The album charted five top 40 singles. Five top 40 singles on a debut rock album!!! This album went 11x platinum....11 times!!! With that many copies in circulation, don't be surprised to hear your grandparents rocking out to this album behind closed doors.
